Fundrace Anyone?

Last year's Presidential race was one of the most contentious in our history. I stumbled upon an interesting website called "fundrace.org." On the site, you can look up your friends, families and foes to determine if they donated money to the RNC, DNC or specific candidates as well as the level of their contribution. While it's interesting to look folks up, to what degree does this imepede your right to privacy?

Privacy is important, for private matters. Things such as one's health care decisions or sexual practices.

Political activity is different. When we take political action it should be in the open, to avoid coercive action. Politics is (or, maybe, should be) collective decision making, and those who put money into the system are taking an action in the political (thus public) realm. Openness and transparency are a goal, privacy begins in politics when you walk into the voting booth.

It is better to be open about your donations to certain candidates and to political campaigns. In this way you are showing that there is nothing to hide. I do not think that displaying yor name and the amount of money you have donated damages your privacy. It is the first step for transparency. When money is involved it is always better to be open, if there is nothing to hide you do not have to worry about privacy.
